Mid-Continent Limestone Quarry Expansion

Rocky Mountain Resources, owners of Mid-Continent limestone quarry, shared plans to expand the quarry above Glenwood Springs earlier this year.

My priorities in regard to the quarry expansion start with the health, safety and well-being of the Garfield County citizens, including health issues related to increased airborne particles, the impact of increased traffic, and the increased noise.

Glenwood’s vital tourism business must not be hurt by expanded operations of the quarry. Visitors come here to relax and enjoy the beauty of this mountain community. The potential negative visual impact of the expanded operation and scarring of the mountain visible from most areas of Glenwood Springs must be carefully weighed.

Any increase in tax revenue and additional jobs added to the local economy from the expanded RMR operation should be weighed against the potential detrimental effects to local businesses, particularly tourism and the outdoor industry.

RMR’s initial launch included information about how they hoped to work with the community to take steps to mitigate the impact of the expansion. They have not yet submitted plans to the Bureau of Land Management for this expansion. No questions are currently before the Garfield County Board of County Commissioners. When the time come, RMR will receive due consideration.

As county commissioner, I will put our people and the communities first.
